This watercolor is done on a creative background wash, something I really like to do. Do you remember my animal calendar project - month animal? It's completely created in this way. In Jean Haines's wonderful and inspiring Online Art School www.watercolorinspiration.com, it was a task for the month of August to paint roosters on a background wash. Et voilà - here is my contribution.

I love to paint roosters since my very first contact with Jean Haines's incredible books and DVD years ago. And I miss painting them, so I'm extremely excited to get in the mood again with this first study for ages. This rooster is done without any primary drawing. Painting rooster and chicken is so lovely and relaxing. This piece is an experimental one, I've added  more and more background. (The image isn't the final version.) For this technique definitely less is more - okay I'll remember this for the next time time.

Today I've started with a new  challenge created by Maggie Latham on Facebook 
LITTLE GEMS PROJECT
Beginning April 1st 2018 I will be painting 100 roundabout 4x4 inch watercolor wash paintings in one year. 
This averages out to posting and sharing two paintings a week for twelve months.

Yes, it's always the first under his hens and it's my very first painting of a cockerel. Now i've stopped with this and hope, it is the right moment. As you see, I'm still in the intensive study of Jean Haines' gorgeous technique and the next weeks it's cockerel time.
