This watercolor is done on a creative background wash, something I really like to do. Do you remember my animal calendar project - month animal? It's completely created in this way. In Jean Haines's wonderful and inspiring Online Art School www.watercolorinspiration.com, it was a task for the month of August to paint roosters on a background wash. Et voilà - here is my contribution.

I love to paint roosters since my very first contact with Jean Haines's incredible books and DVD years ago. And I miss painting them, so I'm extremely excited to get in the mood again with this first study for ages. This rooster is done without any primary drawing. Painting rooster and chicken is so lovely and relaxing. This piece is an experimental one, I've added  more and more background. (The image isn't the final version.) For this technique definitely less is more - okay I'll remember this for the next time time.

This little cockerel is a very good example for me, that I must be more patient. I've disturbed the granulation of the salt ... must try a new one soon.
