"I am a simple man, and I use simple materials:
Ivory Black, Vermilion, Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre,
Flake White and no medium.
That’s all I’ve ever used in my paintings."

-  L.S. Lowry, 1887 - 1976

A question of backgrounding is my actual theme. And this portrait comes to my mind when I think about how important a background is. I reworked it today, and I like how it turned out and hope you do too.

A painting is not finished when it is put in a frame; it is finished when it is marked by the hand of the artist.

“Faeries, come take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind,
Run on the top of the dishevelled tide,
And dance upon the mountains like a flame.”

― William Butler Yeats, The Land of Heart's Desire

That's my version of John Singer Sargent's portrait in charcoal of William Butler Yeats. Again I've used the 12 color-set from Rockwell Canada. They dry a bit pale, but the color range and the granulation is wonderful.

That's my version of John Singer Sargent's Lady Helen Venetia Vincent. I was curious to see if the 12-color set from Rockwell Canada would suit a portrait, and I found it both challenging and wonderful.

Do you know John Singer Sargent RA’s oil painting “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose”, 1885 - 1886. Surely you do, it’s one of this Royal Academician’s most famous works. And this will be my version of it. I love the motive and learned a lot while working on it.

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul,
and paints his own nature into his pictures.
